Calvary's Mission Statement
The Church is formed to support public worship and to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ through such ministries as may be determined by the Church.

A History of Calvary
We're glad your interested in finding more about who we are here at Calvary.  Here's a brief history on how our Church was established.

Calvary Baptist Church was organized on June 24, 1956.  Even though they formed into an independent church on this date, they originally started in 1955.

Hillcrest Baptist Church (*) of Nederland saw a need for a mission in an area of Nederland not yet served by a local church.  Hillcrest Baptist Mission was started with several families of Hillcrest Baptist Church.  Services were held in a three-room house located on 27th street.  They decided for this to truly be a church, they would offer all classes, ministries, and programs of a larger church.  As they began, they immediately drew in families and individuals from the area community.

As the church was formed, the members agreed to follow and abide by the "Church Covenant" and the "Articles of Faith".  They agreed to cooperate with and be a part of the Southeast Texas Association (later called the "Golden Triangle Association"), the State and Southern Baptist Conventions.

A.E. Willis and W.T. Dowden were named as the first deacons, and Bro. Harold Brown was called as the first pastor.  The Charter Membership of Calvary Baptist Church remained open until August 1, 1956.  Charter members of Calvary are presently on the church rolls and actively serving still today.

Land was purchased on Canal Avenue and a building program was started.  Many of the church members donated their time, energy, and finances to the building of Calvary Baptist Church.  Even with the remodeling of many of the rooms over the years, close inspection still reveals the carpentry and handiwork of it's founding members.  Little did they know as they hammered, painted, and laid each brick, that the church they lovingly built would continue to be the house of worship to some of their children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren.

Because of the faithful prayers of it's members seeking God's guidance and the wonderful blessings of His grace through these many years, Calvary Baptist Church is proudly serving the community of Nederland where it presently stands at 2515 Canal Avenue, Nederland, Texas.

(*) Hillcrest Baptist Church was formed as a mission of First Baptist Church, Nederland.
